Safely sharing America's airspace.

The Shared Airspace UTM Consortium is an industry group that digitally coordinates overlapping drone flight paths so complex operations can share the same airspace safely. It's built on consensus standards and developed with participation from the FAA and NASA.

What is "shared airspace"?

As beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone operations scale, multiple operators increasingly want to fly in the same place.

The US Shared airspace UTM network is the digital coordination of operation intents between operators whose drones might overlap. Before takeoff, each operator's system shares where it plans to fly, checks for conflicts with everyone else, and enables adjustments so no two aircraft are headed for the same volume of sky at the same time.

It's built on the international ASTM F3548-21 standard and supports the FAA's framework for these operations (Order 8040.6A) with participation and feedback from the FAA and NASA.

“The FAA is working with the Shared Airspace UTM Consortium to help grow the UTM ecosystem across the country and recognizes the progress being made to safely scale drone operations in shared airspace. The growing number of UTM-enabled flights reflects continued collaboration as operators and service suppliers gain experience with more connected services and more complex operations. The FAA remains committed to working with the consortium and other stakeholders to support innovation and integration while maintaining the safety of the National Airspace System.”

Two ways to take part

Built for service providers and operators

The ecosystem is open to any UTM service provider and the operators they serve.

Service Providers

Provide UTM services

You implement and provision digial UTM services on behalf of yourself or your operators. By meeting industry-consensus standards, you offer a digital, transparent, and scalable way to share the airspace.

Operators

Fly in shared airspace

You run the drone operations, deliveries, inspections, DFR, or other public-safety missions. Working with an onboarded provider lets you safely coordinate with other operators in the same airspace.

What we stand for

Nine guiding principles

Safety first.

Establish & abide by collaborative operating practices for safe, efficient shared airspace.

Support and enable a US-wide approach for UTM.

Implement services on mutually agreed, standards-based requirements for performance, security, privacy & quality.

Evolve and adapt services based on real operational learnings.

Proactively monitor and manage service & operator conformance.

Eliminate barriers to entry with performance-based onboarding criteria.

Govern transparently & fairly, and consensus-driven.

Foster transparency with regulators and invite stakeholder feedback.
